Magha Purnima

According to the Hindu calendar, Magha month falls in the month of January – February. This is the most revered month  as the most famous Kumbh Mela (held every 12 years) and the Magha Mela (an annual event) takes place during this month. Triveni Sangam (a confluence of three rivers) in Prayag or Allahabad. It is regarded as an auspicious day to take holy bath.

Magha Purnima is commensurate on the full moon day that marks the completion of  Magha month.  On this day, millions of devotees that  include saints, sages, pilgrims, travelers, underprivileged, priests take a holy bath in the Ganga, Jamuna, Kaveri, Krishna, Tapti, etc.

Rituals

On this day, the devotees keep a fast to  pay the respect to their ancestors. They  request Vishnu to liberate their deceased ancestor’s soul by taking the dip in the holy river. They offer alms to the poor and needy people. Many people donate cows to Hindu priest  and perform Yajna at Prayag and the request for the forgiveness of their sins.

On this day, Lord Vishnu is worshiped and just like all other Purnima day, Satyanarayana Vratham  Katha is read.

People offer red Chandan powder, fruits, betel nut, banana leaves, beetle leaves, panchamrit and Prasad to Vishnu. Panchamrit, that is offered to Vishnu on this day, is made out by mixing Ganga water, honey, milk, Tulsi and sweets. Prasad offered to Vishnu is prepared by roasting the mixture of wheat and sugar together. Many religious sermons held to celebrate the occasion at auspicious places. People also worship Shiva, Brahma and Laxmi on this day.

Significance of the bath on Magha Purnima

It is believed that anyone, who take a bath on this revered day, would get rid of sins and paved its the way for salvation. He or she would be able to cleanse his or her  mind and soul.

Astrological Significance of Magh Purnima

Astrologically there is a change in the position of the Sun and Moon. Sun enters in Capricornus constellation that is popularly known as a Capricorn Zodiac sign and the Moon enter in Cancer constellation. Thus, taking the ritualistic bath on Magh Purnima can cure a person of all problems related to the Sun and the Moon.
