Som Dev

According to Hindus,  there are nine planets revered as God. The nine planets (Navagrahae)  are Surya(Sun), Som(Moon), Mangal(Mars), Budh(Mercury), Brihaspati(Jupiter), Shukra(Vinus), Shani(Saturn), Rahu(North Lunar Node) and Ketu(South Lunar Node).

The synonym of the Moon is Chandra, Som and Hindus revered him as Somdev (Moon God). Somdev depicted as handsome God with fair complexion attired in white clothes. He is adorned with Golden Crown and pearl necklace. The vehicle of the Somdev is said to be the chariot that has three wheels pulled by ten horses.  All the horses are celestial, unrivaled and are sharp minded. The eyes and ears of the horses are white.  According to ‘Matasyapurana' compared these horses  as white as a couch.

In many temples deities of Somdev has mace in one hand and the other hand is raised in the posture of bestowing blessings.

According to the ‘Srimad Bhagawat’ Moon-God is the son of Maharishi Atri and Anasuya. According to Harivanshpurana, Somdev grew as a young man, he was married to the twenty-seven daughters of ‘Daksha' that are reffered to be twenty-seven constellations. The favorite one of Somdev was Rohini.

Since he ignored his other wives, Daksha cursed his son in law, Somdev that he would disappear gradually. Somdev was frightened and started  praying Shiva to overcome the consequences of the curse of the Daksha. Shiva explained him that he couldnot completly ward off the ill effects of Cures.

He said that while Daksha's curse would cause him to to dimnish, Shiva's boon would cause him to increase. Since then the brighter part of the moon started diminishing for fifteen days and attain the stage of No Moon (Amavasya).
